Using SMSs for Adherence to ARVs

About 1 million HIV-positive South Africans have started antiretroviral (ARV) therapy, and although the public sector roll-out has made great strides in terms of reaching more people, there are growing concerns about long-term outcomes, i.e. patient adherence and retention of patients. Strategies to address these have lagged behind the rapid pace of the programme expansion. Cell-Life will be partnering with the Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute to research whether SMSs can be used to keep people on treatment, and explore other areas such as accidental disclosure and SMS language preferences.
