Using SMSs to improve retention in care of people on ARVs

Long-term retention of patients in antiretroviral therapy (ART) programmes is essential for achieving optimal adherence and successful treatment of HIV. With funding from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), Cell-Life in collaboration with Maternal Adolescent and Child Health (MatCH) designed a multi-site, open-label, randomised controlled trial to evaluate the use of SMSs to improve retention and decrease treatment interruptions amongst patients initiating ART. By combining iDART and Communicate, Cell-Life will send automated clinic appointment reminders as well as daily positive living SMSs to study participants.
