Cell-Life

The South African mHealth partnership brings together technical and clinical experience to deliver on a range of mHealth projects.

PARTNERS:

Praekelt Foundation uses mobile technology to create disruptive, life-enhancing services for the majority world. Our mobile conversation tools, Vumi and Jmbo, are open-source, built for mobile and for scale. Our focus areas include mHealth, mLearning, mGovernance, mAgriculture and mJobs.

Cell-Life is a non-profit using technology services to improve health. Our ARV pharmacy system provides drugs to 300,000 monthly; our mobile data collection is being rolled out in all SA public clinics; and we run many mHealth services in HIV, TB & maternal health, with several formal research studies

WRHI, a recognised research entity of the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand, focuses on the interface between infectious diseases, HIV and reproductive health.

PROJECTS:

1. HIV: Funded by the Vodacom Foundation and USAID, this ICT for HIV/AIDS programme uses mobile technology to support the South African government's response to HIV/AIDS. mHealth at a national scale, supporting prevention, diagnosis, treatment, patient support and overall health systems strengthening. Young Africa Live is a social network on 'Love, sex and relationships in the time of HIV' used by over 1 million people.

2. Mobile Alliance for Maternal Action (MAMA) South Africa is a mobile week-by-week guide to pregnancy, birth and early childhood for South African mothers. It uses a dynamic mobi-community portal, an SMS service, interactive quizzes, MXit, and more to put the power of health in every mama's hands.
